Campus in a Park
The Campus in a Park tour led by Professor Ron Henderson will focus on the contributions of landscape architects Alfred Caldwell, Michael van Valkenburgh, and Peter Schaudt to the Illinois Institute of Technology Mies campus, which was identified by Forbes Magazine as one of “America’s Most Beautiful College Campuses” in 2011. As part of the master plan for the Illinois Institute of Technology, Mies van der Rohe envisioned a “campus in a park” in which the campus buildings would be situated in lawns shaded by groves of trees. Caldwell designed this initial campus landscape, which has been renovated and renewed with a master plan developed collaboratively by van Valkenburgh and Schaudt. Schaudt subsequently contributed a number of other award-winning projects to the campus landscape.
