Artist in Residence 2022: Venetia Stifler and Concert Dance, Inc.

The Mies van der Rohe Society at Illinois Institute of Technology is proud to host Emmy nominated Choreographer, Venetia Stifler, Ph.D., professor emerita, Northeastern Illinois University, and her company Venetia Stifler and Concert Dance Inc. , as their Artist in Residence in 2022. The residency will examine the interrelated and power effects that exist between architecture and dance

Stifler’s work has explored the iconic architecture of Chicago, including the works of Mies van der Rohe. Cynthia Vranas Olsen (M.ARCH. ’01, Ph.D. ’17), director of the Mies Society, stated: “Mies’ work is a powerful statement of how the arts can enrich architectural expression." With Mies van der Rohe’s architectural vision and design embodied in his buildings on Illinois Tech’s campus, the residency is exceptionally fitting.

The residency will continue the collaboration between Stifler and Vranas Olsen and their research regarding the interrelationship between the arts and architecture. In 2017, they teamed up for the event, Architecture of Dance and Music, held at S.R. Crown Hall, where Vranas Olsen presented her dissertation, The Palais Garnier: Toward an Architecture of Dance and Music in 19th Century France, followed by a performance of The Chicago Project: Future Present, choreographed by Venetia Stifler and Concert Dance Inc, with CDI.

We look forward to featuring Stifler and her company Venetia Stifler and Concert Dance Inc. throughout Illinois Tech’s Mies Campus and at upcoming Mies Society events, including Mies’ Birthday Party: Steppin’ Up, on March 24, 2022.
