Exclusive Mies van der Rohe Society Campus Tours
The Mies van der Rohe Society is now offering tours of the world-renowned Illinois Tech Mies Campus. The campus, which is on the National Register of Historic Places, was designed by Mies and includes the largest collection of his buildings. Famous architects continue to be drawn to build on campus, such as Helmut Jahn (alumnus), Rem Koolhaas, John Ronan, and Dirk Lohan (Mies’ grandson, alumnus, and Mies Society Board Member).
Mies Campus was named one of “America’s most beautiful college campuses” (Forbes), with buildings carefully placed within a native landscape of trees, meadows, and wide open spaces. Much of the landscape was designed by Alfred Caldwell, an Illinois Tech alumnus and long-time faculty member, who worked alongside Mies to create Mies’ vision of “a campus in a park.”
Tours will explore architectural expressions spanning over three centuries, beginning with 19th century Romanesque buildings, to Mies’ Mid Century Modern design, and the contemporary design of John Ronan’s Ed Kaplan Family Institute for Innovation and Tech Entrepreneurship (2018).
Special showings of interior spaces will include S.R. Crown Hall, Carr Chapel, newly renovated Mies residence halls, the university archives, and the new Mies Gallery in the Michael P. Galvin Tower (during winter, more indoor locations will be included).
We hope you will join us to examine the conceptualization and shaping of the built and natural environment at Illinois Institute of Technology Mies Campus and to learn about it’s significance within the larger Bronzeville community.
