Re-opening of Neue Nationalgalerie
One of Mies van der Rohe last works, the Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin, re-opened on August 21, 2021, after a six-year rehabilitation by David Chipperfield Architects. The Neue Nationalgalerie was Dirk Lohan’s, Mies’ grandson, first construction management project.

Barbara Kasten’s Month-Long Residency at S. R. Crown Hall
The Mies Society hosted a conversation between Artist Barbara Kasten (Bortolami, New York) and curator Alex Klein on July 22. Kasten was in residence at S.R. Crown Hall at the IIT College of Architecture throughout the month of July. Barbara looked at Crown Hall through yet another lens this month for the Architecture Artist Residency inaugural annual program at IIT.
Cynthia Vranas, Director of the Mies van der Rohe Society
Cynthia Vranas, Ph.D. chosen to serve as Director of the Mies van der Rohe Society and Director of External Affairs of the Illinois Institute of Technology College of Architecture. Cynthia will focus on highlighting Mies van der Rohe’s legacy—his pedagogy, architecture, his colleagues (Walter Peterhans, Ludwig Hilberseimer, Alfred Caldwell, Lilly Reich amongst others) and the IIT campus.
Steven Weiss Elected Chair of the Mies Society Board of Directors
The Mies Society is pleased to welcome Steven Weiss (ARCH ‘73) as its new board chair. Steve has been an active board member since 2012. As an alumni of the College of Architecture who studied in Crown Hall, he has an intimate familiarity with Mies van der Rohe’s work and design principals. Under Steve’s leadership, the Mies Society has refined its mission and will continue to revive its programmatic activities, launch a new and improved website, and reinstitute its tour program.
