The Finely Textured Canopy of Modernism

A grove of honey locust and hawthorn trees, planted by world-renowned landscape architect and former faculty member Alfred Caldwell, ensconces Mies’ iconic S. R. Crown Hall on Illinois Tech’s Mies Campus. Those trees, and their feeling in and around Crown Hall, are the subject of a video by Ron Henderson, College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture + Urbanism Program professor and inaugural Director of Research at the Alphawood Arboretum, the university’s latest distinction for the campus. The video was co-produced by adjunct professor Sarah Hanson (MLA ’14) and Sergio Salgado of Furnace FPS and was recently screened at Mies Society’s Mies Birthday Soiree in March 2024.
